For summer 2005, we will replace the two-person tents in the High Point Units with new Tent-Cabins that will sleep eight. But to make this dream a reality, we need your help!

Tent Cabins

Our Camp Johnsonburg is in dire need of twelve new Tent-Cabins to house campers in the High Point Units next summer. The existing tents are twenty-five years old, need frequent repair, do not adequately protect campers from insects, and require that campers spend much time in pairs instead of modeling supportive, small-group living.

Campers and parents have clearly indicated that the current tents are inadequate and in need of modernization.

Tent-Cabins will provide these benefits:

· Greater opportunity for Christian community
· Increased supervision
· Screened protection from insects

Tent-Cabins are expensive, about $10,000 each -- and we need twelve of them for a total of $120,000. Here are some ways that you can help us improve the quality of life and opportunity at our church camp, and move positively into the summer of 2005:

(1) Keep Camp Johnsonburg's urgent Tent-Cabin need in your prayers.

(2) Make a year-end contribution of any size from individual funds or from the church's mission budget to the Johnsonburg Tent-Cabin Fund. Most of the gifts that will fill the need will come from this category of giving.

(3) If you feel called to provide the funds for one structure ($10,000), we will name it after your church or Presbytery.

(4) If you buy half a unit ($5,000), you will share a name with a partner donor. Memorial gifts or special gifts will be recognized.

(5) Contribute materials and/or skilled labor -- a list of needs will appear on our website -- www.campjburg.org

(6) Use the Johnsonburg Tent-Cabin gift as an alternative Christmas gift to a camper, relative, or friend.

Specific Ways You Might Help

Make a donation to the Tent-Cabin Initiative

Johnsonburg has an exciting opportunity to significantly reduce the cost of building 12 new tent cabins by doing the construction “in house” using volunteer labor. We plan to begin actual construction on the weekend of April 9th. Volunteers are needed to help with tree removal, old platform relocation/storage, setting support blocks and advance building of platform components prior to April 9th so that building can proceed without interruption. We have set aside the weeks of May 8th thru May 13th and May 15th thru May 20th as "tent cabin work weeks".

Volunteers who commit to working either a full or partial week will be provided housing and meals. Volunteers age 16-18 accompanied by a parent/guardian are welcomed. Building volunteers should have prior decking/framing experience. We invite families and youth groups to participate in the projects offered on Spruce Up J’burg Day, Sat April 30th 2005.
